scot_clubs_semi_1_editedResult for the 1st semi-final for the Scottish Clubs Competition

Lee Lindop, Keith McKenzie and Bill Rankin came 17th out of 21 clubs taking part.  It was a hard days fishing to this level of competition angling against the very best (21 teams were competing, including 5 previous winners), as can be seen by the result chart above. First place (not shown here) won with 25 fish, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places with 20 fish. The weather was not always kind to the angler, some rain, flat calm – strong breeze – small ripple and strong sunshine.
All had to fish with barbless or debarbed hooks with the first ten places up for grabs.  Unfortunately  a member of our team had his fly rod broken and could not fish thereafter.

Ahh … just another three fish !!

Cameron Cup Result

The Cameron Cup has again been won by Keith MacKenzie with four fish, not as good as last year however when he had six.

John Pickett Snr and Ronnie Ganley ran him a close second with three fish each.

If it had come down to deciding it on weight Keith would still have won with 9lbs 9ozs, next would have been John with 6lbs 14ozs followed by Ronnie with 6lbs 12ozs. So quite tight !

The fifth and final Tarsan competition was held on Saturday, 8th August.  The loch was high and the weather windy, making fishing challenging.  Only five members weighed in and the top rod was once again Lee Lindop with 10 brown trout, at 6lb 4 0zs.

The top three competitors of this year’s Tarsan competitions will represent the club in the Scottish Nationals next season are as follows:

Ø  Lee Lindop, 40 @ 27lbs 14ozs

Ø  Bill Rankin, 22 @16lbs 3ozs

Ø  Jake Chambers, 20 @ 14lbs 12 ozs

The P J Mackenzie trophy for the most fish caught over the four competitions was Lee Lindop. Paul McLean won the Tarsan cup for the heaviest fish of 1lb 12 ozs.

That’s it for the Tarsan competitions this season, see you all next season, new members always welcome.

The outing to Loch Frandy took place on Saturday 18th July, 13 members attended, conditions were very hard on the day with strong winds and squally showers but that didn’t dampen our spirits for a very enjoyable day !

The results were….. Heaviest catch was Ronnie Ganley with 3 fish for 6lb 12oz, John Pickett Sr caught the heaviest fish at 3lb, and the total catch for 13 members was 14 fish for 32lb 3oz.

After fishing all members went to The Inn at Yetts of Muckart for a very enjoyable meal, followed by the results and presentations for heaviest bag and heaviest fish.

The Over 50’s Competition

Seven members competed on a very windy day with a high water level … winner Keith McKenzie (You don’t want to know how few fish were caught)

Although it might be worth including a wee warning to those anglers who hang a bag of fish caught from one of the rowlocks. A competitor, who shall remain anonymous, did so and lost two fish, which presumably floated out the bag when no-one was watching ! At least it provided considerable hilarity for the rest of the members ! ( The person involved has already had the Macaulay Tankard )

Casting for Recovery

A group of lung cancer patients from the Oncology Unit at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Cowal Hospice and Therapy Services (CHATS) enjoyed a day of fly fishing at Loch Tarsan last Wednesday, courtesy of Argyll Fisheries Trust and Dunoon and District Angling Club.

The outing was based on the Casting for Recovery programme, which is specially designed for people recovering from cancer surgery or treatments, and utilises the same range of muscle movements in exercise programmes to aid recovery.

Everyone agreed the day was a huge success and as well as patients learning a new hobby they also benefited greatly from being with others with similar experiences.

cold west wind

It was their third annual visit to Tarsan. They had 7 members fishing, 28 fish caught, best fish 1.5 lbs.
In their thank-you letter, they said it had poured down with a blustery wind all day,
“but we all enjoyed it with some nice catches” – and went calm for the last hour,
when “We couldn’t see our cars for midges!”
Nice to hear of happy visiting anglers !
