A few photographs from days gone by, kindly sent in by Colin McDonald (snr)
These three pictures show in 2005 a work party on Loch Riddon shore
clearing an area free from seaweed so that it would be suitable for
netting and in 2006 Archie Young demonstrating fly tying at the
Glendaruel open day to show what the angling club and the Ruel Board
were doing for the benefit of the River Ruel.
Memories like these photos are more than welcome to get posted up on our pages, if any member has photos from the past and would like them published here please send them to dunoonangling@gmail.com , the season might be on hold for the next few months due to the virus restrictions so posts like this are just great to keep the website ticking over.
Bill Rankin and Allan Miller were out on Loch Tarsan on the opening day of 2020 season, these nice brownies were just some of the fish caught, all others were returned. The loch has not been stocked yet but as you can see there are still good fish to be caught.
Dear Members……The main double gate at the left hand side of the Col Dam ( small Dam ) is closed NO VEHICULAR ACCESS ALLOWED until further notice. This is due to a problem with the owner SSE.

The DDAC Competitions this coming year need to be be looked at with a view to try
and reconstruct them into a more amicable and enjoyable event.
If any member has an idea, please email the committee, all thoughts are welcome.
The Loch Tarsan five Saturday event has decreased over the years to a number not adequate enough to hold a proper competition. There was only two or three
members in 2019 that actually competed over the five Saturdays.
Which ended up with one winner going through to the SANACC National
Competition.
The SANACC Competitions: The National and the Scottish Clubs are not set in stone
within this club, they can be withdrawn, as it is dependent on the numbers fishing our
competitions, we have already withdrawn the one day challenge trophy.
We do recognise that not all members are competition minded, but for those
members who would like to join in, or members who enjoy the local events,
you do not need to go forward to the SANACC Competitions if so desired, after all
competitions are a fun day out, not just to win a place in the SANACC Comps.
The other events excluding the ‘Pitman trophy’ at the Reservoir were not that far
behind in numbers, generally around six or seven members enjoying a day out, a
few more would help improve the day’s enjoyment.
The Loch Eck trophy (or just a day’s fishing anytime) , has the ability to be a great
day out as one does not need to have special rods or flies, only what you would
need for Brown trout fishing, though heavier tippets is a help.
The benefit from joining in on the competitions is we all can learn from the anglers
who fish regular on our waters, after all, we are all members of the same club.
Dunoon & District Angling Club 70th Annual Dinner and presentation of Prizes 2019
On Saturday 23rd November, Dunoon and District Angling Club held their 70th Annual Dinner and Presentation of Prizes for 2019 in the Argyll Hotel.
Pipe major, Duncan McLeod piped in the top table, led by Club President Davy Landsburgh. President Davy then welcomed members and guests. On his right two guests from Dunrod Angling Club, Greenock, Ronnie Peterson, Honorary Secretary and Vice-president Graham Forbes were warmly welcomed. On the left Mr Iain Burgoyne (nickname Budgie) who was going to propose a toast to Dunoon and District Angling Club and William Dick who is gong to propose a toast to the Gentle Art. Both guest speakers are from New Cumnock.
The evening started with Joe Docherty saying Grace followed by a first-class meal.
Iain (Budgie) Burgoyne gave an extremely entertaining and very funny talk finishing with a toast to Dunoon and District Angling Club.
This was followed by the presentation of prizes.

The Jimmy Docherty Rover Challenge Trophy presented to a member who makes a qualifying catch from all or most of the club’s waters during the current season. This year’s Trophy was won by four members – Bob Clark, Allan Miller, Bill Rankin and Alastair McGillivray
On the 27th July the annual fishing match took place at Loch Tarsan between DDAC and Dunrod Angling Club. The day started with bacon rolls in the Argyll Hotel where we found Dunrod had only 3 anglers and DDAC had 5 anglers. It was decided to draw straws to see who would fish for Dunrod. President Davy was left out of the draw. Bill Rankin, Ron Ganley, Allan Miller and Lee Lindop drew straws and, believe it or not, Dunoon gave Dunrod our club champion, Lee Lindop.
At the end of a fine day’s fishing, Dunrod won the day with 6 fish to 5.
The Thomson Trophy was donated by Jack Thomson, a member of Dunrod Angling Club, who was also a founder member of Dunoon and District Angling Club for 67 years.
The trophy was introduced to promote inter-club friendly fishing rivalry. Jack Thomson sadly passed away earlier this year. So, it is fitting that the Thomson Trophy goes back to Dunrod this year. The President’s address was that it “gives him great pain” to present the trophy to Vice-president of Dunrod, Graham Forbes.
President Davy announced that Colin MacDonald Junior, a member since 1977 and one of DDAC’s past presidents was unable to attend the dinner and sends his apologies. Colin is on his way to the World Fly-fishing Championships in Tasmania because he has been chosen to fish in the Scottish team. This is a huge achievement and the Club wished Colin every success.
After the presentation of trophies, Mr Willie Dick, President, New Cumnock Burns Club gave a very, very funny and interesting talk on how to enjoy your fishing and finishing with a toast to “The Gentle Art”.
This year Raffle was a great success with a lot of great prizes and raised 430 pounds for club funds. Peter Menzies and his team did a fine job. Many thanks to all members and guests who brought along a raffle prize.
Professor Jim Sharp was last year’s recipient of the Macaulay Tankard. This tankard is presented each year to an unsuspecting recipient for services to the Club. This year’s winner was Peter Menzies who was given 15 minutes to prepare a reply. Peters reply was very witty and funny and he was delighted to receive the Tankard.
President, Davy Landsburgh thanked the guest speakers and contributors for a real “guid” night and especially thanked members and guests for their continued support of the dinner. Russell Buchanan Past President proposed a vote of thanks to the President for chairing a fine fine evening which resulted in a standing ovation.

Bill Rankin was out on the Loch and had a good day, caught two fish, one at 8oz and the one pictured at 3lb 5oz (21 inches) all returned safely …. well done Bill !
